vocal tracks on this album are in effect remixes
Mike heard the acapella sketches i sent his housemate at the time to listen to and ran with it
these were songs written to wholly different tracks, which sounded wholly different

Stefan & Barb loved the first one, proceeded with the album, signed it to a major publisher, set us up with my first mutek concert as a vocalist

let that be a lesson to developing artists
1. if u have strong foundational training, u can play other instruments
2. pay no mind to people who have a lot to say

that was great fun in montreal
On POSSIBLE CONCLUSIONS TO STORIES THAT NEVER END, Mike Shannon lets a slightly more pop-abstract side of himself show, as the low-house tempo "Come To U" quietly hums into life, accompanied by breathy vocals by Anaïs. "Sudden Moves" goes in a bouncier direction with a shuffling dub-electro, while "Sweet Lies" slides into a sensuous slowness. "Blind" wanders down a chillier Detroit-inspired path that's echoed later on "Bathing In Microwaves," and "Miyako" takes a more abstract route. The spoken word on "Last One Terrified" doesn't do too much for me, but the jazz rhythms on "Tears" and the quiet percolating on "The Last Days" sure hit the spot. These stories sound just fine.
From an instrumental standpoint, this CD is okay...If a little middling. The inclusion of vocalist Anais (not sure if I spelled that right, sorry) ruins several of these tracks ---I don't consider her a very good vocalist; sounds very forced and she's not interesting or dynamic enough to justify the affectations. I have given it several listens, thinking I was perhaps not giving it enough of a chance, but still have trouble making it through any track she's on.

I hope Mike Shannon has more wholly-instrumental releases, because those tracks are far more enjoyable! I would consider this a fair release for an artist early in his career, however it sounds like he has yet to fully come into his own.
