I received the tape from Forever Escaping Boredom – a label that has been actively putting out records since 1997. I wasn’t familiar with neither the Zone Tripper trio nor any of the artists involved. Despite that, being an avid fan of post-apocalyptic themes I was really curious to hear a noise record that is so obviously based upon similar motives.

The 32-minute long, self-titled album contains two tracks which I assume are a result of a collaborative noise improvisation. I assumed that it’s all improvised because the tracks are quite simplistic – there are no buildups, atmospherics or other compositional tricks apart from some sound samples/pieces of dialogue thrown in here and there (for example Iggy Pop’s opening line from the 1990 movie Hardware). Now this particular feature of the album might be a merit for some and a disadvantage for others. To me, it sounds like a noise jam recorded by a couple of friends which lacks any clear direction whatsoever. And that’s probably the biggest issue with this album.

Nonetheless, the trio managed to capture some interesting, futuristic synth sounds reminiscent of a less focused take on Stimbox’s trademark ‘laser noise’. Just underneath the sci-fi veneer, there are some interesting things going on – crunchy, distorted textures, some feedback and even trace amounts of tame metal junk noise. The track on side B of the tape doesn’t take things further as it’s just a reiteration of the same thing that’s been going on throughout side A.

I can absolutely see and appreciate the idea behind the record and the act. Combining sci-fi and harsh noise might be an interesting area to explore but it definitely needs proper execution and focus. Zone Tripper’s s/t tape seems more like a demo rather than a complete work.
